The author, Chen-Yung Fan, a former ensign in the Navy of the Republic of China and a Ph. D. in Education from Duke University, has given the scholarly world an important, original monograph. Based on painstaking research he demonstrates the importance of the Chinese language school in the San Francisco area. His interviews with parents, students, and school administrators make it lucidly clear that the Chinese language school is a sine qua non in the preservation of the ancient cultural heritage of China. The Chinese language school is faced with the monumental task of ameliorating the serious cultural conflict arising between generations due to the fact that the Chinese youngsters in San Francisco lack an adequate knowledge of the Chinese language. Dr. Fan concludes that the Chinese language schools of San Francisco are doing so well that Chinese parents--at least for the next few decades--will continue to require that their children attend these schools so as to preserve the integration of their families and their cultural identity. This is an imperative book for any Chinese family immigrating to the United States. Besides his very careful and extensive interviews, Dr. Fan has utilized 80 books, 34 periodicals, 8 official reports, 8 yearbooks, and 21 newspapers. Roughly 140 of the above 151 works are in English and the remaining are in Chinese. ? |
