The four chapters and an interview gathered in _New Starts_ focus on a series of related questions. What happens when a theoretical work is transposed to another culture and becomes effective there? What is the function of landscape descriptions in poems or in novels? How is it that such descriptions make an ethical demand on the reader or force the reader to do something as a result of the reading? In what sense may works of literature provide new starts for their readers or communities of readers? All these questions converge on the issue of how literature or theory can be productive in the culture of its readers, as opposed to merely reflecting that culture. Each chapter of _New Starts_ takes up these questions by reading a single work: the book of Ruth from the Bible, Alfred Lord Tennyson's 'Tears, Idle Tears,' William Faulkner's _Absalom, Absalom!_, and Wallace Stevens's 'The Idea of Order at Key West.' The wide-ranging interview of Miller by Shan Te-hsing takes up these and other related topics. ? |
